About Me
Jen Murphy is a writer and editor who lives between Boulder, Colorado and Maui. She is the travel advice columnist for Outside Online. Jen spent eight years working as an editor at Food & Wine magazine and fell in love with craft beer, amaro, sea salt brownies, and the gorgeous plates made by Hering Berlin. Her tenure as Food & Wine's travel editor took her on a railway journey across India and a surf trip through Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, among other delicious adventures.
In 2011, Jen moved to San Francisco to become the deputy editor of AFAR magazine. She also served as executive editor at Sunset magazine. As a side hustle, she wrote the Wall Street Journal's "What's Your Workout" column for nearly 20 years and has profiled the exercise routines of everyone from politician Sarah Palin to NFL quarterback Drew Brees.
She was an adjunct professor at New York University and taught courses on magazine and web editing. Her writing has been featured in the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel +Leisure, Bloomberg, Men's Health, Men's Journal, and Esquire. She is the editor of Wildsam Field Guide: New England and Wildsam Field Guide: Hawaii, as well as the author of The Yoga (Man)ual.
Jen's obsessions include surfing, snowboarding, yoga, running, books, hiking, biking, ice cream, the beach and all things travel. Her current travel wish list includes surfing in Gabon, snowboarding in Iran, amd road tripping Oregon's coast.
